Delving into the background of the recall, according to News 5 Cleveland, East Cleveland's mayor is once again facing a recall marking the second attempt within a year by opponents seeking to oust him from city hall. In the previous recall attempt last year, Mayor Brandon King narrowly avoided removal by just eight votes. Organizers of the current effort express confidence in its success, citing an increased number of reasons to justify King's removal from office.

A closer look at the procedural aspect reveals that, according to News 5 Cleveland, Clerk of Council Eric J. Brewer said that East Cleveland residents had 30 days to collect the necessary signatures for a recall petition against King. A total of 417 valid signatures surpassing the required 396 were certified prompting a recall vote. The concerns driving the recall include a $62 million deficit, 19 indicted police officers obstruction of city council unkempt community spaces and overall city mismanagement. Mayor King given the option to resign or challenge the recall within five days has chosen to contest it. The recall election is set for December 5 and if successful Council President Juanita Gowdy would assume the mayoral position per East Cleveland's charter.
