Steve Demetriou, House Representative of Ohio, said that legislative action is necessary following the governor's veto of property tax relief, despite extensive public debate. His remarks were made on X.

"Ohioans need property tax relief—not more delays," said Demetriou. "We passed a budget that delivers it. The Governor vetoed it. After months of debate and public input, he wants more “working groups. We'll be responding to his vetoes. It's time for action."

Property tax reform has been a central issue in Ohio's budget discussions for 2024. Lawmakers are addressing increasing property assessments and the tax burdens faced by homeowners. According to The Columbus Dispatch, while proposals to cap increases and expand homestead exemptions have been put forward, partisan disagreements and several gubernatorial vetoes have hindered significant reform.

The Lincoln Institute of Land Policy reports that Ohio’s average effective property tax rate stands at 1.57%, placing it among the top ten highest in the nation. Homeowners in Ohio pay a median annual bill of approximately $2,220, with rates exceeding 2% in some urban counties such as Cuyahoga and Franklin.

According to The Center Square, recent changes to Ohio's property tax laws have not been as comprehensive as those enacted in other Midwestern states like Michigan and Indiana. These states have implemented stricter assessment caps and exemptions. Ongoing vetoes and legislative gridlock have left Ohio lagging behind its peers in terms of aggressive property tax reform.

Demetriou is a Republican representing Ohio’s 35th District in the House of Representatives. Elected in 2022, he has a background as an Army officer and business leader. He serves on the House Finance Committee and focuses on tax relief, business development, and transparency.
