DECA Members Volunteer at Local Food Pantry

Heights Career Tech students are giving back to those in need this fall with the skills that they have developed from the Marketing Management program. On November 15th, DECA members of the program volunteered at the Euclid Neighborhood Food Pantry where they created advertisements and helped stock the market’s shelves for community members to "shop" for goods.

Students worked alongside their teacher, Sarah Parker, and their AT&T Aspire Mentoring Academy Champion, Ms. Tania Thomas, to prepare the “market” for community members to "shop" for goods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, canned goods, and personal hygiene products.

As part of the National DECA Chapter Campaign project, members must perform community service, create publicity for the community service event via advertising media, and have seventy-five percent of the DECA chapter participate.

"The students came together, rolled up their sleeves, did what they were asked to do and made a difference,” says Mrs. Parker. “They were able to see firsthand how much need there is in the community for food pantries, and were grateful for the experience of helping others.

"Following their time volunteering at the Euclid Neighborhood Food Pantry, the students joined their AT&T Aspire Mentoring Academy Champion for lunch at Dewey’s Pizza on Lee Road in Cleveland Heights. Business etiquette techniques such as table manners and communicating to each other with respect and professionalism were reinforced by the DECA members throughout the luncheon.

DECA, An Association of Marketing Students, is a co-curricular club that can only be joined by students in the Business Foundations class and/or the Marketing Management program. For more information on joining DECA, please contact Mrs. Parker at S_Parker@chuh.org.
