Statement On Ohio Board of Education's Anti-LGBTQ Resolution | Cleveland Heights High School

On Tuesday, December 13, the Ohio State Board of Education adopted a resolution opposing Title IX protections for LGBTQ+ children. The resolution is an amended version of the text originally brought forth in September. However, the resolution - and the foundation of bigotry it’s built upon - is harmful, dishonest, and completely unacceptable.

It is clear to me that the goal of this resolution has never been to protect anyone, but rather to pander to a political base. The resolution is in stark contrast with our values as a school district. CH-UH stands for equitable treatment of all students. This is written in our Equity Policy, our Board Policy, and our Strategic Plan, but most importantly it is brought to life by the caring communities that staff have developed in our schools.

I want to thank our State Board of Education representative Meryl Johnson, as well as the six other members who opposed this resolution and continue to defend the rights of LGBTQ+ students. Thank you to all of the students, families, staff, BOE members and community members who contacted the State Board this fall. I am proud to serve a community that will always fight back against injustice. I promise you that we will never stop working to ensure that our schools are places where every child can feel safe and genuinely proud of who they are.
